Cayla Schroeder capped a stellar weekend by pounding 15 kills to go along with 22 digs and 3 blocks to help No. 20 Augustana rally from a 1-set deficit to defeat Northern State in 4 sets Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D. The Vikings prevailed 22-25, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18.
The win keeps the Vikings undefeated in the league at 3-0, and moves the team to 10-5 overall. Northern State falls to 1-2 in the NSIC and 9-3 overall.
In the first set, Augustana opened an early 7-2 lead when
Kati Newgard scored a kill on a
Brianna Erickson assist. However, Northern State rallied and closed the set on a 23-15 run to win. The Vikings regrouped, and after being knotted at 15 with NSU in the second set, closed on a 10-3 run to draw even at 1-1. A close third set at 20-19 was closed again by a Viking run of 5-0 that featured 3 NSU attack errors. In the fourth and deciding set, the Vikings opened a 14-3 lead and never looked back to seal the victory.
Along with Schroeder's 15 kill effort,
Beth Talcott scored 15 kills and 9 digs.
Jenna Hultgren posted 19 digs.
Lisa Hoegh registered 44 assists and 14 digs.
The Vikings next head to Wayne, Neb., to face Wayne State on Saturday, Sept. 27. The match begins at 4 p.m.
