Vikings Women's Soccer Drop 2-1 Decision to U-Mary

Box Score

The Augustana women's soccer team found itself in an unfamiliar situation that it had not been in for close to a month as the Vikings dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of Mary Saturday at Yankton Trail Park. The setback snapped the Vikings' school-record five-game winning streak and its consecutive scoreless streak.

Up until Saturday, the Vikings (5-2-1) had not given up a goal since its matchup with the Colorado School of Mines on August 31, keeping its opponents scoreless for an astonishing 514 minutes and 36 seconds of play. But the streak came to an end early in Saturday's game when Marauder forward Jessica Janusz scored at the 4:22 mark.

The Vikings fell behind 2-0 at the 14:29 mark when U-Mary's Joanna Drennan launched a corner kick into the top right corner of the goal. But the Marauders (2-6-1) were shut out out for the remainder of the game as Augie's senior goalkeeper Lisa Jarovski made five saves the rest of the game, keeping the Vikings within striking distance.

Augustana put up five shots on goal in the first half without putting any points on the board, but the Vikings would double its offensive production in the second half, putting up 10 shots.

With the Augie offense putting pressure on the Marauders goalkeeper, it was only a matter of time before Augie would get one in net.

Augie's only goal of the game came from the Vikings' leading scoring combination at the 87:34 mark as Katie Shandri scored her team-high fifth goal of the season off an assist from Stephanie Goos, her team-high fifth assist of the season.

The Vikings will have little time to recuperate as they will host Northern State University (5-4-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Yankton Trail Park.
