The Augustana volleyball team rallied from a 1-game deficit but could not finish off a pesky Wayne State College squad, falling to the Wildcats in 5 sets Saturday in Wayne, Neb. The Wildcats claimed the match by scores of 25-20, 25-27, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11.
The 18th-ranked Vikings dropped the first set before regrouping to win the second and thrid sets. In the third set, the Vikings trailed 23-22 before stringing together three-straight points to take a 2-1 lead.
However, the host Wildcats rallied themselves to capture the fourth set and force a final set. In the last set, Wayne State gained the early upper hand by taking a 4-1 lead and they maintained the lead the rest of the set.
Augustana had four players reach double digits in kills, led by
Cayla Schroeder who had 18.
Ellen Andrews added 16 kills to go along with a .412 attack percentage, while
Beth Talcott contributed 15 kills and
Kati Newgard 11 kills.
The Vikings relied on their defense as five players had at least 10 digs. Libero
Jenna Hultgren led the way with 22, while Schroeder picked up 21. Talcott,
Lisa Hoegh and
Brianna Erickson all had 17 digs. Hoegh also chipped in with 58 assists.
Augustana returns home next week for Vikings Days weekend. The Vikings will entertain Bemidji State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Both matches will be played in the Elmen Center.
