Augie Volleyball Knocks Off St. Cloud State 3-1

The Augustana volleyball team put together a solid offensive and defensive performance to defeat St. Cloud State in four sets in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Tuesday night in St. Cloud, Minn. The Vikings won the match by game scores of 25-13, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14.

The 23rd-ranked Vikings (11-6, 4-1 NSIC) nearly had twice as many kills as the host Huskies. Augustana had 63 kills compared to just 36 for St. Cloud State (2-13, 0-7 NSIC). The Vikings hit .265 for the match while limiting SCSU to a .146 attack percentage.

Augustana controlled the first two sets, pounding 32 kills to just 10 errors. However, the attack errors caught up to the Vikings in the third set as they had 8 errors, while the Huskies had 14 of their 36 kills.

But the Vikings regrouped in the fourth set, hitting .364 in the set with 16 kills and just 4 errors.

Augustana had four players reach double digits in kills. Ellen Andrews, Cayla Schroeder and Beth Talcott all had 14 kills, while Kati Newgard contributed 11. Schroeder anchored the defense with 22 digs, while Brianna Erickson added 16. Jenna Hultgren chipped in 14 digs from her libero position, and Lisa Hoegh tossed in 10 digs to go along with 55 assists.

The Vikings return home after four-straight road matches for a pair of key NSIC matches. Augustana entertains Bemidji State Friday at 7 p.m. before playing host to No. 13 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Elmen Center.
