Vikings Soccer Wins Home Opener over Adams State 3-0

Box Score

The Augustana women's soccer team enjoyed a triumphant home opener as two players scored their first career goals to lift the Vikings to a 3-0 victory over the Adams State Grizzlies in the Augustana Classic Friday at Yankton Trail Park.

With the win, Augustana improved to 1-1-1 on the season, while Adams State dropped to 1-3-0.

Sophomore Katie Shandri broke a scoreless tie with her second goal of the season at the 27:52 mark off an assist by Lisa Shirk.

In the second half, Shandri and Shirk again hooked up for a goal. This time, Shirk, a sophomore defenseman, took a pass from Shandri and netted her first career goal at the 73:59 mark.

Freshman Raelyn Walczak put the game away at the 86:54 mark when she scored the first goal of her career, putting the Vikings in front 3-0. Shirk also assisted on the play, giving her 1 goal and 2 assists on the afternoon.

It was a physical game from beginning to end as both teams combined for 17 fouls. Adams State defenseman Cydney Kramer received 2 yellow cards in the contest, which resulted in a red card and her ejection from the game. As a result, she will have to sit out Saturday's game against the MSU-Billings Yellowjackets.

The rough play did not slow down Augie's offensive attack as the team took 33 total shots on the Grizzlies goaltenders. Shandri led the way with a game-high 12 shots, five on goal, resulting in a goal and an assist.

The shots on goal were fired consistently at the Grizzlies goalkeepers as Augustana recorded 15 shots in the first half and 18 in the second, causing Grizzlies head coach Tom Cliff to make a change in goal (16:01) in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Lisa Jarovski started in net for Augie, making three saves in the first half before handing over responsibility to sophomore Mikhaila Baltes, who saved six shots in the second half preserving the Vikings' first shutout of the season.

The round-robin invitational continues Saturday with Adams State taking on MSU-Billings at 2 p.m. Augustan and MSU-Billings wrap up the invitational on Sunday at noon. Both games will be played at Yankton Trail Park.
