The Augustana soccer team defeated Minnesota, Crookston 2-1 on Sunday at the Augustana Campus Soccer Field. Junior
Katie Shandri scored both goals for the Vikings, giving her four goals on the weekend.
Augie took control from the beginning, taking nine shots in the first 25 minutes of the game. Shandri scored at the 39:37 minute mark on an assist by junior
Stephanie Goos, who had just subbed into the game less than a minute before.
Minnesota, Crookston answered quickly though as Kaitlyn Ostergren scored an unassisted goal just minutes later, tying the score at 1-1 going into halftime.
Augie had two corner kicks in the first few minutes of the second half, but they were unable to convert. The Vikings kept the pressure on the Golden Eagle defense and were able to pull ahead 2-1 at 62:41. Shandri scored her second goal of the day off of a ball passed by sophomore
Stacy Dally that allowed her to beat the defender and score from the left side.
Shandri nearly completed the hat trick minutes later when she took a pass from midfield and beat the Minnesota, Crookston goalie on a shot in the corner. She was called offsides on the play and the goal was waved off.
The Viking defense was able to hold Minnesota, Crookston and Augie completed its final home game of the season with a 2-1 win.
Shandri took 10 shots in the game, five of which were on goal. Senior
Kayla Peek contributed three shots and two shots on goal, while freshman
Jessie Huff and sophomore Alison Schmitt each added three shots.
The Vikings will complete their regular season play next weekend as they travel to Bemidji State for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday followed by a 1 p.m. game on Sunday against conference-leading Minnesota Duluth.
