The Augustana volleyball team lost its second match of the weekend Saturday night in Duluth, Minn. The Vikings fell 3-1 to Minnesota Duluth after losing in five games to Bemidji State on Friday night.
The loss gives the Vikings a 8-11 record overall and they are 3-4 in conference play. The Bulldogs are 14-3 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in NSIC play.
Augie tied the first set up at 14-14 with a kill from junior outside hitter
Beth Talcott. Minnesota Duluth's Rachel Lambers served four points in a row for the Bulldogs, thanks to three straight attack errors by the Vikings. After an Augustana timeout the Bulldogs scored another two points, making the score 20-14 and forcing Augie to take another timeout. The Vikings would only score four more points, and fell the first set 25-18.
Augie led at 18-11 in set two when a kill by freshman right side
Jordan Spatenka forced Minnesota Duluth to take a timeout. The Bulldogs fought their way back into the game took the lead at 23-22 after a kill by Jamie Lakatos. Augie took a 24-23 lead thanks to a kill by Talcott and an ace by junior middle
Brianna Erickson. A Bulldog attack error followed by a service error by freshman setter
Breanna Brandt and an ace by Minnesota Duluth gave the Bulldogs the 26-25 advantage. Augie answered with a kill by freshman outside
Megan Bezdicek but a block by the Bulldogs put the score at 27-26. Augie scored two more points before UMD tied the score at 28-28. The Vikings finally put the set away at 30-28 thanks to two Bulldog attack errors.
The Bulldogs led by as many as four early in set three, but the Vikings tied the score at 20-20 with a block by Erickson and senior outside
Jenna Hultgren. It was too little, too late however as Minnesota Duluth escaped with the 25-22 victory.
Augie gained an early 8-2 lead in set four thanks in part to a serving run by freshman setter
Dani Haley. The Bulldogs battled back and tied the score at 12-12 with a ball handling error by Brandt. The teams traded points until Minnesota Duluth scored three points in a row and forced Augie to take a timeout at 21-19. The Bulldogs would hold Augie to only two more points and won the set 25-21.
Spatenka led the Vikings with 11 kills while Hultgren chipped in 10. Brandt collected 21 assists to go along with five kills and freshman libero

The Vikings will be back at home next weekend as they host Minnesota State, Moorhead at 7 p.m. on Friday followed by Minnesota, Crookston at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
