The Augustana women's soccer team's chances of making the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament suffered a big blow as Bemidji State edged the Vikings 3-2 in overtime Friday afternoon in Bemidji, Minn.
The loss dropped the Vikings to 7-7-5 overall and 4-4-4 in the NSIC. Meanwhile, Bemidji State improved to 10-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the NSIC. Augustana is now in ninth place in the league standings with 16 points with 1 game remaining at Minnesota Duluth on Sunday. Concordia-St. Paul is in eighth place with 17 points heading into its regular season finale tonight against St. Cloud State. A CU win would eliminate the Vikings from the NSIC Tournament.
Augustana controlled the early stages of the game.
Katie Shandri put the Vikings on the board first when she scored an unassisted goal at the 17:08 mark to give the visitors the early lead.
Bemidji State tied the game at the 20:45 mark when Ashlee Ellefsen scored the first of her 3 goals.
Shandri netted her second goal of the game and 10th of the season off an assist from
Jessie Huff at the 26:16 mark. It was Shandri's third-straight multi-goal game.
After the Vikings took a 2-1 lead at halftime, Ellefsen again knotted the score when she scored an unassisted goal early in the second half, making it 2-2 at 53:40.
Ellefsen ended the game with just 1:26 left in the first overtime period when she recorded the hat trick off assists from Yesenia Garcia and Bri Scanlan.
Augustana outshot Bemidji State 21-12, but it was the Beavers who had a 4-2 edge in overtime.
Amanda Wagner suffered the loss in net for the Vikings as she made 5 saves and allowed 3 goals. BSU's Abby Kjonaas allowed 2 goals and made 12 saves.
The Vikings conclude the season Sunday at Minnesota Duluth in a 1 p.m. game.
