The Augustana volleyball team dropped a close 3-0 decision to St. Cloud State by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 26-24 Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Vikings slipped to 11-16 overall and 6-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while SCSU improved to 7-21 overall and 3-13 in the NSIC.
All three sets were close. In the opening set, Augustana led most of the way, including a 17-15 edge. However, St. Cloud State reeled off 4 straight points to take a 19-17 lead. The Vikings eventually pulled within 1 at 22-21 before the Huskies recorded 3 straight kills to close out the set.
In the second set, Augustana again grabbed the early lead and held it for most of the set. Then with the score tied 13-13, the Huskies went on a 5-2 run to open an 18-15 lead. SCSU pushed the lead to 22-18 to gain control of the set.
St. Cloud State grabbed the early lead in the third set, racing out to a 7-3 advantage. Augustana rallied to tie the score 13-13 before the hosts opened up an 18-15 lead.
Again, Augie rallied to tie the score at 19. Then with the score knotted at 20-20, the Vikings scored 3 of the next 4 points to take a 23-21 lead. But Augustana could not close out the set as 2 straight Husky points tied the score 23-23. The score was later tied 24-24 but 2 consecutive attack errors by the Vikings sealed the win for the Huskies.
Augustana hit just .115 in the match, while St. Cloud State hit .222.
Ellen Andrews was the lone Viking in double figures in kills with 14.
Jenna Hultgren had a team-high 16 digs, while
Dani Haley had a double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs.
Beth Talcott also had 10 digs.
Kayla Tschida had 12 kills to lead St. Cloud State, while Ashley Shields added 10.
Augustana returns home next weekend for the final home matches of the regular season. The Vikings play host to Bemidji State on Friday, November 6, at 7 p.m. before taking on Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, November 7, at 5:30 p.m.
