Vikings Slay Dragons in Five Sets

The Augustana Vikings won a tight road match Friday night against MSU Moorhead. The Vikings won in five, 25-18, 25-27, 22-35, 25-23 and 15-8.
 
The Vikings improve to 13-18 on the season and 8-11 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Dragons fall to 20-12 overall and 10-9 in NSIC play.
 
The first set remained close until a scoring run by senior outside Jenna Hultgren put the Vikings up 20-13. The Dragons tried to close the gap, but multiple attack errors plus two kills by senior right side Ellen Andrews gave the Vikings the victory.
 
The teams traded points in set two, and the score was tied seven times. Augie tied the score at 23-23 thanks to a kill by freshman middle Brooke Lewko. A kills by the Dragons game them game point, but another kill by Lewko tied the game again at 24-24. An attack error by the Vikings followed by a service error by MSU Moorhead locked the score at 25-25, but the Dragons would come out on top pounding a kill and then forcing another Viking attack error for the win.
 
Set three proved to be close as well when a kill from MSU Moorhead's Mary Sussenguth cut the Viking lead to two at 20-18. The Dragons then scored five points in a row to take a 23-20 lead. A kill by junior middle Brianna Erickson plus a kill by junior outside Beth Talcott moved the score to 23-22, but MSU Moorhead put two points together for the 25-22 win.
 
The fourth set looked much like the first three, with neither team able to pull away from the other. The score was tied 19-19 before back-to-back kills from Hultgren and Andrews put Augie on top 21-19. A Dragon kill and a kill by Lewko moved the score to 22-20 before MSU Moorhead scored two in a row to tie the set at 22-22. Augie would only allow the Dragons to score one more point and won the set on a MSU Moorhead serving error.
 
Augie took a quick 5-0 lead in the fifth thanks to three Dragon attack errors and two kills by Andrews. The Dragons used their second timeout when a block by Lewko and Hultgren improved the Viking lead to 8-2, but they were unable to answer the Viking attack and Augie easily put away set five.
 
Andrews led the Vikings with 17 kills and Lewko added 12. Hultgren recorded 20 digs and freshman libero Grace Sanders collected 18.
 
The Vikings will play their final home game of the season tomorrow against Minnesota, Crookston at 4 p.m.
