Vikings Snap Streak with Win Over Bemidji State

Box Score

The Augustana volleyball team broke its four-match losing streak Friday night with a 3-1 win over Bemidji State. The Vikings came out on top with match scores of 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, and 25-17.

The win improves Augie to 12-16 this season and 7-9 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Beavers drop to 9-18 on the season and 6-10 in the NSIC.

Bemidji State started the game out on a 4-0 run thanks to strong serving by Lindsey Weyer. Augie evened out the score thanks to a kill by junior outside Beth Talcott and back-to-back Beaver attack errors. The teams traded points until a kill by freshman setter Dani Haley tied the score at 15-15. Two kills in a row by senior outside Jenna Hultgren forced the Beavers to take a timeout at 17-15, but the Vikings were able to pull away and secure the game.

Set two was even most of the way with the score being tied 11 times. Augie gained an advantage and moved the score to 22-20 after kills by freshman right side Jordan Spatenka and junior middle Brianna Erickson. Another kill by Erickson plus a block by Erickson and Andrews gave the Vikings game point and Andrews finished it with a kill of her own.

Bemidji State built a lead in the third set, leading 10-5. The Vikings were able to pull within one at 16-15 thanks to a service ace by freshman libero Grace Sanders but the Beavers score three points in a row to increase their lead to 19-15. Augie was unable to answer and a kill by Bemidji State's Laura Slinger ended the set 25-10.

Augie dominated set four, leading by 13 points after an attack error by the Beavers changed the score to 21-8. The Beavers had just 10 kills with six errors in the fourth, making the deficit hard to make up, and the Vikings closed out the match.

Beth Talcott led Augie with a season-high 14 kills and 13 digs while Andrews added 13 kills of her own. Hultgren also recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Haley dished out 35 assists.

Erickson and freshman middle Brooke Lewko each contributed four blocks.

The Vikings will play their final home game of the season tomorrow night as they take on No. 16 Minnesota Duluth at 5:30 p.m.
