The Augustana men's basketball team (6-1, 1-1 NSIC), behind a 20-point effort from sophomore
Cody Schilling, rebounded back from its first defeat of the season with an 82-77 victory over the Northern State Wolves in front of 2,668 spectators at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Vikings got the scoring started with a three-pointer by Schilling at the 18:44 mark in the first half. Augustana held the lead until the 3:50 point of the first-half when Northern State's Collin Pryor, who finished with 20 points, hit a jumper in the lane to put the Wolves in front 26-25.
Augustana answered right back on a three-pointer by junior
Chad Hetterman from the left-wing, which put the Vikings up 28-26 with 3:43 left in the first half. They kept the lead the rest of the half and went into the locker room at halftime with a 33-32 advantage despite being outshot 46.2% to 38.2% by Northern State.
The Wolves (3-4, 0-2 NSIC) were aided in the first half by an eight to three advantage in makes at the free throw line and Augustana was held without a field goal in the final 3:06 of the first frame.
In the second half, the two teams traded leads until there was 8:08 remaining in the contest when Augustana jumped out to a six-point lead, 61-55, on a pair of Schilling free throws. The lead was extended to 10 points, 70-60, at the 5:10 mark on a break-away layup by Schilling, who was fouled on the shot but missed the free throw.
Northern State cut its deficit to 70-65 with 4:20 left in the game on a three-point play by Mitch Boeck, who led the Wolves with 21 points.
The Wolves trimmed the lead to 77-75 with 1:23 left in the game when Marty Gregor sank a lay-up and a free throw after being fouled. From there, the Vikings hit five of their last six free to seal their first conference victory of the season.
For the game, Augustana connected on 26-of-57 shots from the field for 45.6% and were 8-of-21 (38.1%) from behind the three-point arc. At the charity stripe the Vikings connected on 22-of-31 attempts (71%).
Every Viking that saw playing time scored as freshmen
Cameron McCaffrey and Kenny Brown each added nine points, while seniors
Jordan Dalton,
David Foster, and
Elliot Thomas finished with eight points each. Augustana also forced 19 turnovers in the contest and scored 11 points off those miscues by the Wolves.
Northern State shot 51.9% (27-of-52) from the field and were just 2-of-10 from three-point land. They finished the contest 21-of-26 (80.8%) from the foul line. The Wolves also won the rebounding battle 38-25.
Derek Hoellein and Marko Filipovic were also in double-figures for Northern State with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Vikings will return to action on Saturday, December 12, when they host the Wayne State Wildcats at 7 p.m.
