The Augustana softball team went 0-2 in the opening day of the 2009 season at the NSIC/RMAC Crossover Tournament on Friday in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Vikings fell 11-3 to Colorado State-Pueblo before losing 6-3 to Metro State.

In the opener, CSU-Pueblo struck early as they scored two runs in the first inning when Augustana pitcher Kelly Ottis walked Kelly Purcell. Purcell stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Ashley Aldrich also walked before stealing second. Purcell then scored by stealing home and a single by Kayla Dionese scored Aldrich.

The Vikings tied the game in the second as sophomore Traci Fransen doubled to right center. Erika Wolner singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kelsey Kalkman followed with a double to the outfield fence to score Fransen. Wolner, who had to hold at second on the play, advanced to third on the play and later scored on a ground out by Erin Bohlmann.

The Thunderwolves scored two more runs in the third, followed by five runs in the fifth, all earned.

Augustana didn't score again until the sixth inning as Wolner walked and advanced to second on a single by Kalkman. Another single by Taylor Kapsch scored Wolner, but the Vikings left both Kalkman and Kapsch on base.

The Thunderwolves ended the game by scoring two more runs, thanks to a triple by Janine Tyler that scored Katie Johnson. A ground out Purcell that scored Johnson ended the game.

Kalkman was 2 for 3 in the game with 1 RBI and Kapsch went 2 for 3 and earned 1 RBI. Wolner was 1-for-1 with 2 walks and scored twice.

Ottis recorded the loss as she went 2.2 innings with 7 hits and 4 earned runs. She also struck out 4 batters. Mickey Anderson pitched 2.0 innings of relief, allowing 5 earned runs on 5 hits and struck out 2. Chelsey Durland allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits in 1.0 innings of relief.

In the second game, Metro State scored one run in the second inning as Kellie Kishikida homered off of Augustana's Britt Stewart. The Vikings answered with a homer by Kalkman in the bottom of the inning.

Metro scored again in the third as the leadoff batter, Jessica Haab homered to right center. Augie was able to tie the score again in the fourth when Fransen doubled before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Stewart. Fransen then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.

Both teams scored one more run in the fifth inning. Augie's Kapsch doubled to left field and advanced to third on an illegal pitch. Kapsch scored on a sacrifice fly by Ally Rutherford

Augustana nearly took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, with runners on first and third and 1 out, Wolner grounded into a double play to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Stewart walked Lauren Hainlen before Amber Roundtree homered to left center. Sarah Rusch doubled and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Jennessa Tesone singled through the left side, scoring Rusch.

Augie was unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh and ended the game down 6-3.

Both Kalkman and Rutherford were 2 for 3 with one RBI. Fransen was also 2 for 3 and scored one run.

Stewart pitched a complete 7 innings allowing 5 earned runs on 9 hits and struck out 2.

The Vikings will take the field again tomorrow at noon (MT) against Mesa State before battling Regis at 3 p.m. (MT).
