The Augustana women's basketball team had its 13-game home winning streak snapped with a 63-59 loss to the University of Mary Friday night at the Elmen Center.
With the loss, the Vikings dropped to 18-6 overall and 12-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Marauders improved to 14-9 overall and 9-8 in the NSIC.
The Vikings took control of the game from the start, outscoring the U-Mary 15-2 in the first 5 minutes of the game. Augie led by as many as 12, 24-12, with 7:43 left in the half before U-Mary scored 9 unanswered points to pull to within at 24-21 with 5:41 on the clock.
Both teams traded baskets until U-Mary outscored Augie 8-4 in the final three minutes to end the half down 35-32.
U-Mary took the lead early in the second when Sonny Schulz hit a 3-pointer and Abby Reiter made a free throw to put the Marauders up 44-42 with 15:47 left to play. Augie pulled ahead by one with two made free throws from
Whitney Hofer to make the score 58-57 with just 5 minutes remaining.
U-Mary then scored 6 unanswered points over the next 4:45 to take an insurmountable 63-58 lead with 15 seconds remaining.
Hofer led all Augie players with 15 points and 10 rebounds, recording her third consecutive double-double.
Amy Puthoff added 13 points while
Megan Doyle added 10.
Schulz led all scorers with 25 points with Rachel Zillmer and Liz Simpa adding 9 each.
Augustana shot a season-low 27.5 percent from the field, making just 14 of 51 shots. That number was dramatically lower in the second half as the Vikings made only 5 of 26 shots (19 percent). Meanwhile, U-Mary shot 38 percent from the field, connecting on 21 of 55 attempts.
The Vikings will play in-state rival Northern State on Saturday at the Elmen Center. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
