The Augustana softball team fell to Mesa State (Colo.), 12-4, and to Regis (Colo.), 7-4, on the second day of the NSIC/RMAC Regional Softball Crossover Tournament Saturday hosted by the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
In the first game, Mesa State jumped out to a 7-0 lead by scoring three runs in the first inning and two runs in the top half of both the second and third innings.
The Vikings were able to generate their only four runs of the game in the bottom half of the third inning when junior
Kayla Henke singled to right field scoring freshman
Kelsey Kalkman. Then with two outs senior Ally Rutherford blasted a pitch from Maverick starter Jessica Rayman over the left field fence to bring home Henke and freshman
Taylor Kapsch.
MSC added another run in the top of the fourth inning and four more in the top of the sixth. Augustana, which committed five errors in the game, scattered four hits the rest of the way before the game was ended after six innings.
Freshman
Chelsey Durland took the loss on the mound for the Vikings as she allowed seven runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits in three innings. Durland struck out two of the 18 batters she faced and walked one. Sophomore Erin Bohlmann pitched the final three innings and gave up eight hits and five runs, all unearned.
Bohlmann was 2-for-2 at the plate with a singe and a double, while Rutherford and Henke each went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Against Regis, Augustana (0-4) again fell in an early hole by allowing six runs in the first four innings. Similarly to the Mesa State game, the Vikings scored all four of its runs in the same inning.
Kapsch and freshman
Elizabeth Murray led off the fifth inning with a pair of singles before Henke doubled to right center field scoring both base runners. Then Rutherford singled to center and sophomore
Traci Fransen hit a sacrifice fly that scored Henke. Rutherford crossed home plate when Kalkman doubled to left center to cut the lead to 6-4.
That was as close as Augustana, who out-hit Regis 9-8, would get as the Rangers added another run in the top of the seventh.
Viking freshman
Britt Stewart suffered the loss by allowing six runs, three earned, seven hits, while striking out two and walking three batters. Sophomore
Mickey Anderson pitched the final three innings and allowed one run on one hit. She struck out two batters and walked one.
Henke led Augustana at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two RBI's. Kalkman was the only other Viking with multiple hits as she was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Augustana will be in action again on Sunday when the Vikings take on Fort Lewis (Colo.) and Colorado School of Mines on the last day of the regional crossover tournament that pits teams from the Northern Sun and Rocky Mountain conferences.
