Augie Softball Goes 1-2 in First Day of Emporia State Tournament

The Augustana women's softball team went 1-2 in the first day of the Emporia State Tournament in Emporia, Kan. Saturday.

Game 1
 

Augie (1-8) started the tournament with a 13-0 rout of Southwest Baptist University, in which the Vikings scored runs in every inning, including 7 in the first inning, while collecting 13 hits in a 5-inning game.

Britt Stewart started on the mound for Augustana, going 5 innings to earn her first win of the season. She is now 1-2 on the season, after giving up just 3 hits, while striking out 3. Brittney Wood pitched one inning to take the loss for Southwest Baptist.

Ally Rutherford led the way for Augustana, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, while scoring 3 runs. Chelsey Durland also went 3-for-4 and drove in 3 RBI, as Erin Bohlmann went 2-for-2, scoring 2 runs and driving in an RBI.

Game 2 

In the second game of the day, the Vikings played Emporia State close, but the Hornets prevailed 4-1.

The Vikings scored its only run in the top of the sixth inning, but a pair of solo homeruns from the Hornets and a costly error in the bottom of the sixth gave Emporia State enough runs to surpass Augustana. 

After a pair of singles and a sac bunt to start the sixth, Rutherford drove in Taylor Kapsch on a single.

Kelly Ottis (0-2) took the loss for Augustana, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings of work, while Jennifer Heerey moved to 7-5 on the season with a win.

Augie combined for 6 hits in the game, as Rutherford went 1-for-3 and drove in the only Augie run, while Erika Wolner went 2-for-3.

Game 3 

The Vikings dropped its final game of the day 9-1 to Washburn University, as Augie was held to just 2 hits in the 5-inning game.

The only run in the game was scored by Kelsey Kalkman on a wildpitch in the top of the fourth inning. Kalkman went 1-for-2 in the game and Stewart had the other hit for Augie going 1-for-3.

Mickey Anderson (0-2) went 3.1 innings to take the loss, after giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits. Kayla Long earned the win for Washburn Unviersity.

The tournament will continue with the Vikings playing the University of Nebraska at Omaha at 10 a.m., followed by a 12:30 game with Truman State University.
