Augie Softball Wins Third Game in a Row Over Wisconsin-Parkside and New Haven

The Augustana softball team beat the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers 1-0 in a pitching dual and finished off the University of New Haven Chargers 2-1 in 8 innings Friday, in the second day of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

With both wins, Augustana moves to 4-11 on the season and have now won three straight games.

Game 1
The Vikings were able to hold off a late game scoring threat from Wisconsin-Parkside, as Chelsey Durland shut down the Rangers to earn the first win and shutout of her young Augie career.

The Rangers cleanup hitter Amy Horn started the top of the seventh with a leadoff single. Durland (1-2) was able to get out of the first jam of the inning as the next batter, Lisa Casey fouled out to third base as Horn was on the move to second to give the Vikings a double play.

The next batter got on with a single and after an error, the Rangers had a runner in scoring position. But with two down, Durland was able to get a ground ball out to end the game and drop the Rangers to 7-8 on the season.

Augie scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Ally Rutherford led off with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Traci Fransen.

After a line out, Kelsey Kalkman delivered a single to centerfield to drive in Rutherford for the score. Kalkman finished the game going 2-for-2 win a double and game-winning single, while four other Vikings collected a hit.

Durland recorded the first shutout of the season for the Vikings, after throwing a 5 hit game and striking out 1 batter. 

Game 2

The strong performances from the Augie pitching staff continued, as Mickey Anderson shutdown the University of New Haven in 8 strong innings.

Anderson (1-2) gave up 8 hits in the game and no earned runs, while striking out 3 batters to move earn her first win of the season.

After the Chargers got on the board in the second innings, the Vikings tied the game up in the top of the fifth as Erin Bohlmann led off with a single, was sacrificed over to second and made it to third on an infield ground ball.

Taylor Kapsch then stole second base and the Chargers catcher threw down to allow Bohlmann to advance home to score the tying run.

In the top of the eighth inning, Kayla Henke started at second base and was sacrificed to third base before Rutherford drove in the game-winning run on a double.

Anderson came in and shut the Chargers down in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory.
Augustana will play the University of Nebraska-Omaha at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and will take on Wayne State (Mich.) at 11 a.m. in the final two games of the Rebel Spring Games.
