Augustana Softball Shutout in Two Games with Southwest Minnesota

The Augustana softball team dropped two games to Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn. on Tuesday. 

The Vikings lost the opener 3-0 before falling 4-0 in the second game. This moves Augie's record to 19-19 and 10-3 in the NSIC. The Mustangs improved to 18-16 and 10-2 in the NSIC. 

The first game remained scoreless until the third inning with Southwest Minnesota's Meaghan Laetsch reached on a fielder's choice. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrea Fennern before advancing to third on a pass ball. She then stole home to score the first run for the Mustangs. 

Augustana was close to scoring in the fifth when Kayla Henke singled to center field. She then stole second and advanced to third on the ground out by Erika Wolner. Ally Rutherford struck out swinging and left Henke stranded. 

In the sixth, Kristin Braden singled before advancing to second on a passed ball. Christine Borowiak singled to left center, advancing Braden to third. Borowiak stole second and a double by Amanda Burkhart scored Braden and Borowiak. 

Augie failed to generate offense in the top of the seventh and fell 3-0 to the Mustangs. Chelsey Durland suffered the loss for the Vikings. She went 6 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits. 

The Mustangs struck right away in the second game, scoring one run in the first inning. In the third, Borowiak singled to center field and scored on a home run by Burkhart. A one-run homer by Amanda Tucci put the Mustangs up 4-0. 

The closest the Vikings came to scoring was the fifth inning when Rutherford led off with a single to center field. Traci Fransen singled to left field, advancing Rutherford to second. A single by brought Rutherford to third, but the Vikings couldn't capitalize, leaving all baserunners stranded. 

Fransen was 2 for 3 and Kelly Ottis recorded the loss going 2.1 innings and allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits. 

The Vikings will next play a double header at Bemidji State on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
