Augie Softball Splits with Minnesota State Thanks to 7th Inning Maverick Rally

The Augustana softball team came out 1-1 today in a double header against Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. The Vikings defeated the Mavericks 9-0 in five innings in the first game before falling 3-2 in a come from behind victory by Minnesota State. Augie now is 23-21 overall and 14-5 in NSIC play. The Mavericks are 33-11 overall with a conference record of 14-6.
 
Augie started the day off strong as Kayla Henke led off the first game with a double to right field. A sacrifice bunt by Erika Wolner moved Henke to third before she scored on a double by Ally Rutherford. Traci Fransen singled to left center, scoring Rutherford. A homerun by Britt Stewart put the Vikings up 4-0 at the end of the first inning.
 
The Vikings capitalized again in the third when Rutherford doubled to center field. A single by Stewart advanced Rutherford to third before Stewart stole second. A sacrifice bunt by Erin Bohlmann plated Rutherford and a single by Elizabeth Murray scored Stewart. 

In the fifth, Rutherford recorded her third hit of the game by singling through the left side. Fransen singled to third base and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Stewart. Bohlmann was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, which also advanced Fransen and scored Rutherford. Another wild pitch advanced Bohlmann to third before a fly out by Murray scored Bohlmann. With the Mavericks unable to answer in the fifth, the Vikings won 9-0.

Chelsey Durland received the win for the Vikings allowing no runs on three hits in five innings. 

Rutherford was three for three at the plate. She also scored three times and recorded one RBI. 

Augie looked like they would keep momentum in the second game, scoring one run in the second inning. Stewart was hit by a pitch and then proceeded to steal second and third before scoring on a double by Bohlmann. 

The Vikings wouldn't score again until the sixth when Fransen was walked. Brittany Lipetzky pinch ran for Fransen and was advanced to third on a single to right field by Stewart. Lipetzky scored on a fly out by Bohlmann and the Vikings took a 2-0 lead. 

Augie held that lead until the bottom of the seventh, when Minnesota State's Chelsea Erickson singled through the left side. A single up the middle by Abby Morris advanced Erickson, and Amanda Umhoefer came in to pinch run for Morris. A double to left field by Katie Reed scored both Morris and Umhoefer before a single up the middle by Natalie Spicer scored Reed and gave the Mavericks the 4-3 victory. 

Stewart suffered the loss for the Vikings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. 

Bohlmann went 2 for three and recorded two RBI.

The Vikings will be back in action at home Saturday with a double header against St. Cloud State starting at 12 p.m.
