Augustana Softball Sweeps Concordia in Home Doubleheader

The Augustana softball team swept Concordia University, St. Paul with a 9-1 and 8-4 win in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bowden Field and have now won four straight games.

The Vikings are now 27-21 overall this season and 18-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while the Golden Bears drop to 33-20 and 15-7 in the NSIC.

Game 1
Augustana celebrated senior day with a six run fifth inning, that included three home runs to beat Concordia 9-1 in five innings.

After two scoreless innings, Concordia got on the board first in the top of the third, but Augie bounced back with a three run bottom half of the inning.

The third started with the Concordia pitcher making a throwing error to put Kelsey Kalkman at second bas. After an Erika Wolner walk, Kayla Henke connected on a single to load the bases.

Clean up hitter Ally Rutherford then drove in Kalkman on an infield ground ball and then stole second. The throw went into centerfield on the steal and allowed Henke to score.

Traci Fransen drove in Rutherford to put the Vikings out in front 3-1 after three innings.

The Vikings then put together one of its best half innings of the season in the bottom of the fifth as Rutherford drew a two out walk before Fransen drove in her second and third RBI of the game with a home run over the left field fence.

Britt Stewart followed it with a single up the middle and Erin Bohlmann hit her second home run of the season to make it 7-1.

Elizabeth Murray then made it to first on a walk and Kalkman hit the third home run of the inning to put an end to game one.

Chelsey Durland pitched five innings in the pitcher circle, giving up 1 run on six hits to improve to 10-4 on the season.

Fransen went 2-for-3 in the game with 3 RBI and 1 run scored, while Bohlmann also went 2-for-3 and drove in 2 RBI. Kalkman finished the game 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Game 2
Augie got on the board first as Fransen continued to shine offensively with a lead off single in the second inning.

Then with the bases loaded, Fransen scored on a wild pitch. The inning was ended on double play. 

Augie kept things going in the third inning as Henke led off the inning with a double and Erika Wolner drew a walk before Fransen sent her second home run of the doubleheader over the left field fence.

Concordia answered with a three run fifth inning, to knock Stewart out of the game. Stewart (13-8) gave up 1 earned run and 6 hits in 5 innings on the mound, before turning the game over to Kelly Ottis, who pitched the final two innings to earn her first save of the season.

The Vikings put the game out of reach with a three run sixth inning after Kalkman singled and advance to third on a double from Taylor Kapsch before Henke drove in Kalkman.

Augie added the final runs pair of runs with a single from Wolner, to put the Vikings up 8-3 before Concordia scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh.

Fransen again went 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI, while Wolner went 1-for-3 with a run and 2 RBI and Henke finished 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.

The Vikings will play in its last regular season twin bill against Minnesota State University Moorhead Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Bowden Field.
