Augustana Softball Splits Doubleheader with No. 9 Winona State

The Augustana softball team had its 9-game winning streak snapped by the No. 9-ranked Winona State Warriors with a 7-0 loss in the first game of a twin bill, but bounced back with a 7-2 win in the second game Tuesday in Winona, Minn. 

The Vikings dropped its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game of the season and are now 15-17 and 6-1 in the NSIC, while the Warriors are 27-8 and 7-3 in the NSIC.

Game 1
Augustana's offense was held to just 2 hits in the game while, the Warriors pounded out 7 runs on 10 hits to break the Vikings' nine-game winning streak.

Winona State made a 4-run statement in the bottom of the first inning as the Warriors took advantage of starting pitcher Kelly Ottis, who hit two batters and walked another in the midst of a 3 hit inning.

The Warriors then scored a pair of two out runs in the bottom of the second, after a solo home run from Amanda Wilhelm and an RBI double from Annie Stuedemann to make it 6-0.

Winona State added another run in the fifth, as Stacey Struzynski cruised to her seventh shutout of the season. Struzynski (12-3) completed her 13th game with 10 strikeouts.

Ottis (3-6) gave up all 7 runs on 8 hits in 3.2 innings, while striking out 3 batters. Britt Stewart came in and pitched the final 2.1 scoreless innings. Stewart gave up 2 hits and struck out 1.

Ally Rutherford got the first Augustana hit and Taylor Kapsch went 1-for-1 with a walk. 

Game 2
Augustana got another solid start out of NSIC pitcher of the week Chelsey Durland, as she held the Warriors to 2 runs on 6 hits to earn her sixth win of the season.

Durland (6-3), who held the Warriors scoreless through five innings, while recording 5 strike outs in the game.

The Vikings got on the board first in the top of the fourth when Stewart hit her second home run of the season, before scoring four more runs in the fifth.

Kelsey Kalkman led off the fifth with a single to left, Ottis then stepped in to pinch run and was moved to third after a bunt and double by Kayla Henke. Both Henke and Ottis scored on a single from Erika Wolner to make it a 3-0 game.

After a pair of walks, the bases were loaded and Stewart scored two more on a single through the right side to take a 5-0 lead.

Durland gave up her first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, but the Vikings answered with another run in the top of the sixth as Traci Fransen drew a bases loaded walk to go up 6-1. Both teams added a run in the seventh inning to end at 7-2.

Stewart had things working offensively in the second game, going 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI, and Wolner went 1-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI. Seven different Augustana players scored a run in the game. 

The Vikings will be back at home to play Northern State in a NSIC doubleheader on Friday. The first game at Bowden Field will start at 2 p.m.
