The Augustana women's soccer team opened its season with a victory, topping Adams State, 2-0, in the Grizzly Classic Thursday in Alamosa, Colo. The Vikings dominated the first half, outshooting Adams State, 16-8, en route to the win.
The Vikings outshot the Grizzlies, 20-12, and had an 8 to 6 shots-on-goal advantage.
Jenna Doerneman scored the first goal for the Vikings at 35:07 into the match. She received a pass from Alison Schmidt near the top of the box and shot a chip shot that the Adams State goalie could not get to in time.
Stephanie Goos added a second goal for the Vikings, when she scored on a penalty kick at the 54:37 mark.
Katie Shandri had four shots, including one on goal, while Goos and Doerneman each had three shots.
Goalie duties were split by
Melissa Fowler and
Amanda Wagner, who each defended the net for a half. Fowler started the match and had three saves, and Wagner stopped three shots in the second half.
The Vikings will have a day off before playing their second opponent at the Adams State Grizzly Classic. Augie will face Fort Lewis on Saturday in Alamosa. The match is slated to start at 11:30 a.m. Mountain Time.
