Augustana Volleyball Falls to No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney

Box Score

The No. 25 ranked Augustana volleyball team lost in straight sets to No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney Wednesday night at the Elmen Center. Set scores were 25-18, 25-15 and 25-16.

The loss dropped Augustana to 3-2 on the season while Nebraska-Kearney remained undefeated at 5-0.

In the first set, a kill by freshman outside Megan Bezdicek tied the score at 3-3 before Nebraska-Kearney's senior right side Shannon Clausen served five points in a row to take the lead to 8-3. The Vikings would never make the margin up as the Lopers controlled the defensive side of the ball, tallying five team blocks. Back-to-back kills from Nebraska-Kearney's junior middle Jeri Walkowiak ended the set 25-18.

The Lopers controlled the second set as well with Augie giving up two big scoring runs. A six-point serving run by junior setter Cola Svec put Nebraska-Kearney up 13-7. Augustana had seven kills and seven errors in the second set, making it difficult to surmount a comeback and fell 25-15.

In the third, the set remained close until a run of errors by the Vikings moved the Lopers ahead 12-9. The Nebraska-Kearney defense continued to deny Augustana while the Lopers recorded 16 kills and only 5 errors on the way to a 25-16 victory.

Senior right side Ellen Andrews had a team-high 9 kills and freshman setter Breanna Brandt recorded 16 assists. Freshman libero Grace Sanders collected 16 digs.

The Vikings will travel to the Colorado Premier Tournament in Denver, Colo., this weekend where they will play Northwest Nazarene University on Friday at 3:30 p.m. (MT), followed by No. 10 University of Tampa at 7:30 p.m. (MT).
