Grace Sanders Leads Augie Defense in 3-0 Win Over St. Cloud State

The Augustana volleyball team defeated St. Cloud State 3-0 Tuesday night at the Elmen Center. The 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 victory was thanks in part to freshman libero Grace Sanders, who set a career-high with 32 digs. 

The win improves the Vikings to 3-2 in the conference and 8-9 overall while the Huskies slip to 6-13 on the season and 2-5 in NSIC play.

The teams traded points in the first set until a kill from senior right side Ellen Andrews locked the score at 21-21. A St. Cloud State hitting error followed by a service ace from junior middle Brianna Erickson forced the Huskies to take a timeout at 23-21. Augie finished the set with a block from senior middle Blythe Johnson and junior outside Beth Talcott followed by another service ace from Erickson.

St. Cloud State led early in set two when a kill by Kristen Stott put them up 10-4. Augie clawed its way back into the game and a block by Johnson and Andrews tied the game at 13-13. The lead changed back and forth until a serving run by St. Cloud's Sarah Madden gave the Huskies a 20-17 lead. Back-to-back kills by the Vikings followed by a Sanders service ace tied the score again at 20-20. Senior outside Jenna Hultgren pounded a kill to tie the game again at 23-23 and a kill from freshman outside Megan Bezdicek followed by a St. Cloud error gave the Vikings the 25-23 win.

Augie looked to have an easy third set after a service ace from Sanders gave them a 23-13 lead. St. Cloud scored points before a kill from freshman middle Brooke Lewko gave Augie match point at 24-15. A kill by Brittany Novak earned St. Cloud State the serve and Chelsea Nagle served eight points in a row to make the score 24-23. Augie finally put the match away when Hultgren put down a kill from freshman setter Dani Haley.

Sanders' 32 digs is the highest by any Viking this season and she averaged 10.67 digs per set. Johnson led the Viking offense with a season-high 11 kills and freshman right side Jordan Spatenka recorded a career-high eight kills. 

Haley dished out 23 assists and freshman setter Breanna Brandt notched 22 assists.
