The Augustana women's basketball team defeated Upper Iowa University 96-84, Friday night in Fayette, Iowa. The Vikings made 15 3-pointers in the game, which sets a season-high for the team and narrowly missed tying the school record of 16.
The win improves the Vikings to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Peacocks are now 0-9 in the NSIC and 1-14 on the season.
The Peacocks jumped out to a quick start, scoring six unanswered points in the first 1:17 of the game. A 3-pointer by sophomore forward
Faith Tinklenberg cut the lead in half, but Upper Iowa's Kenya Howard made a jumper to increase the lead to 8-3 with 17:49 on the clock.
Freshman center
Alex Feeney dropped in a jumper at the 17 minute mark, but Upper Iowa answered with a three for an 11-5 lead.
Augie then had an offensive explosion, going on a 20-3 run in the next five minutes to go up 25-13. 18 of those 20 points came from behind the arc, with junior guard
Tessa Wilka making two in a row.
The Peacocks dropped in a three of their own, but Augie would score 11 more unanswered points to take a 36-16 lead with 9:42 to play.
Upper Iowa went on a six-point run, but Augie answered with a run of their own, scoring eight straight points with two more 3-pointers to go up 44-24 with 6:56 left in the half.
The teams traded points until Upper Iowa ended the half by scoring nine unanswered points and cutting the Viking lead to 51-38.
The Vikings shot 52.8 percent (19 of 36) from the field and 54.5 percent (12 of 22) from 3-point range. In contrast, the Peacocks were 43.8 percent (14 of 32) and 22.2 percent (2 of 9) from behind the arc.
Augie collected 14 rebounds as a team in the first half, just two more than Upper Iowa's Howard pulled down on her own in the half.
The second half started with the Vikings in control as they outscored the Peacocks 11-2 in the first 3:50 of the half to gain their biggest lead of the game at 62-40.
Upper Iowa then went on a scoring spurt, closing in on the Viking lead by scoring 19 points to Augie's four. This made the score 66-59 with 10:59 on the clock.

Molly Hayes and junior forward
Kristi Board combined to score the next 18 points for the Vikings. Hayes had 11 in that run while Upper Iowa only scored five points, making the score 84-64 with 6:17 left to play.
The Vikings held on to their lead, but in a last effort, Upper Iowa made four threes in the last three minutes of the game to pull the score to 96-84.
Augie shot 52.1 percent (37 of 71) for the game and was 41.7 percent (15 of 36) from downtown. Upper Iowa was 47.7 percent (31 of 65) from the field and 35 percent (7 of 20) from 3-point range.
The Vikings recorded 12 steals and committed only 15 turnovers to Upper Iowa's 23, but the Peacocks outrebounded Augie 42-32.
Hayes set a season-high with 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting. She was also 4 of 4 from the charity striped and dished out eight assists.
Doyle added 17 points and seven assists with Board contributing 16 points and seven rebounds.
Tinklenberg and Feeney each added 15 points.
Howard scored a game-high 26 points for the Peacocks and pulled down 16 rebounds. Joining her in double figures was Lana Otting with 20 points.
The Vikings will play again tomorrow night as they take on Winona State for a 5 p.m. matchup.
