The Augustana women's basketball team kept its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record untarnished with a 82-65 win over Bemidji State Saturday night in Bemidji, Minn. The win extended the Vikings' winning streak to 8 games.
The Vikings were led by freshman
Alex Feeney, who scored a career-high 21 points. The Vikings are now 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate conference. The Beavers drop to 8-4 on the season and 2-3 in the NSIC.
Augie started by outscoring the Beavers 10-2 in the first 3:88 of the game. The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes until a layup by Bemidji State's Kim Rosecrans pulled the Beavers within four at 13-9 with 14:17 to play.
The Vikings then outscored Bemidji State 15-8 in the next seven minutes to take a 28-17 lead. Six different Vikings scored during that stretch.
The Beavers pulled to within nine after two made free throws by Samantha Baldwin, but Augie sophomore guard
Molly Hayes answered with a layup to give the Vikings a 30-19 lead with 7:27 on the clock. Augie put together another run late in the half, scoring eight unanswered points, including a 3-pointer by Feeney, which put them up 42-25 with just under four minutes in the half.
Bemidji State sank four free throws to end the half down 42-29.
The Beavers started the second half out hot, scoring seven unanswered points in the first 1:41. The Vikings quickly answered, scoring eight points in a row to take a 50-36 lead thanks to 3-pointers by Feeney and junior guard
Megan Doyle, plus a layup by junior forward Krisit Board.
Bemidji State pulled to within 11 after Shannon Thompson made a layup and was fouled by Board. The made free throw moved the score to 50-39 with 15:37 to play. Augie put the game out of reach by scoring 10 straight points, including two treys by sophomore
Liz Helsper. The surge put the Vikings up 70-47 with 8:07 to play.
The Beavers were unable to build a comeback as the Vikings sailed to the 17-point victory.
Augie shot 45.2 percent (33 of 73) from the field compared to Bemidji State's 32.8 percent (20 of 61). The Beavers bested the Vikings from 3-point range, shooting 34.8 percent (8 of 23) while Augie was 31.3 percent (10 of 22) from behind the arc.
Feeney's 21 points led all scorers, and she also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Doyle collected her second-straight double-double by scoring 16 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, which matched her career high. Board rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
The Vikings will play again on Sunday as they take on Minnesota Duluth at 2 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
