A career effort by sophomore forward
Faith Tinklenberg helped the Augustana women's basketball team to a 78-58 rout of Southwest Minnesota State Friday night at the Elmen Center. Tinklenberg recorded her first double-double by scoring 14 points while setting a career-high with 10 rebounds.
The win improves Augie to 14-3 overall and 8-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Mustangs fall to 11-6 on the season and 5-5 in the conference.
The Vikings took a lead from the start, outscoring the Mustangs 15-5 in the first 5:20, with nine of those points coming from junior forward
Kristi Board.
The Vikings continued to roll, only allowing the SMSU to score three more points in the next six minutes to take a 25-8 lead with 8:30 left to play.
The Mustangs finally found their range around the five minute mark, when SMSU's senior guard Megan Stadler got things rolling by draining a three at the 5:04 mark. This sparked an eight-point scoring run that cut the Viking lead to 30-18 with 3:51 on the clock.
Augie was plagued with turnovers, allowing the Mustangs to continue to cut into the deficit, but back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore forward
Teri VerSteeg and Tinklenberg made the score 38-23 with just 46 seconds on the clock.
The Mustangs scored the final four points of the half, with junior guard Tori Fink making a jumper at the buzzer to end the half with a 38-27 Augie lead.
The Vikings were 13 of 33 (39.4 percent) in the first half, while the Mustangs were a just 10 of 40 (25 percent). Augie was also 6 of 16 (37.5 percent) from behind the arc with SMSU only connecting on 3 of 10 (30 percent) of their 3-point attempts.
Augie lost the turnover battle for the half, committing eight turnovers to SMSU's four, but outrebounded the Mustangs 30-22.
SMSU started the second half by going on a 6-2 run and cutting the Viking lead to seven points. This made the score 40-33 with 17:23 to play in the game.
Augie quickly answered with tres from Tinklenberg and freshman center
Alex Feeney on consecutive possessions, and built their lead back to thirteen points.The teams traded baskets until the Mustangs scored five straight points to make the score 55-49 with 7:52 to play.
Junior guard
Megan Doyle was fouled while driving to the basket, making the layup and the point after, but the Mustangs answered with a three from Fink. Tinklenberg scored a bucket for the Vikings, but another tre by the Mustangs moved the score to 60-55 at the 5:40 mark.
The Viking offense then exploded, outscoring the Mustangs 18-3 in the final five minutes of the game.
Augie shot 46.3 percent (25 of 54) for the game and 41.7 percent (10 of 24) from behind the arc. SMSU was just 28.4 percent (21 of 74) from the field and 33.3 percent (6 of 18) on 3-pointers.
The Mustangs collected nine steals and forced 15 Viking turnovers.
Tinklenberg and Board led the Viking offense with 14 points each, with Board collecting nine rebounds. Feeney added 13 points and eight rebounds while Doyle contributed 13 points, five assists, and three steals.
Fink paced the Mustangs with 17 points and Stadler poured in 16 points.
The Vikings will be back at home tomorrow as they take on Minnesota State at 5 p.m.
