SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana erased a 1-0 deficit and got goals from
Jessie Huff,
Jill Goodrich and
Maren Werth to roll past Southwest Minnesota State 3-1 Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Augustana improves to 4-6-2 (3-3-1 NSIC), while SMSU falls to 1-7-2 (0-5-2 NSIC).
The Vikings recorded a season-high 13 shots on goal in the win. The three goals Augustana got past SMSU goalkeeper Kendra Olchefske was also a season high. The Vikings outshot the Mustangs 21-13.
SMSU opened scoring early in the first period at the 11:22 mark when Courtney McCarthy took a cross pass from Kelly Fitzgerald and found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, though, Augustana answered when
Ciara Godfrey found a streaking Huff well across midfield for a breakaway goal. The goal was Huff's first of the season.
Goodrich scored the game-winning goal deep into the first period, taking a
Mackenzie Trom corner kick and heading it past Olchefske. The goal--Goodrich's first of the season--came in the 39th minute.
Werth put the finishing touches on the win in the 49th minute with the help of teammates
Stephanie Goos and
Kate Timmons. Goos entered a corner kick to Timmons, who centered the ball to Werth for a shallow goal. The goal marked Werth's first of her career.
Augustana's offense was dominant throughout, holding a 10-2 advantage on corner kicks in the contest.
The Vikings got a strong performance from goalkeeper
Amanda Wagner, who finished with nine saves to record her fourth victory of the season.
Augustana continues this four-match roadstand next weekend when the Vikings host Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State on Saturday and Sunday. Both matches begin at 1 p.m.
