WINONA, Minn. - The Augustana football team recorded a second road shutout to stay unbeaten as the Vikings blanked Winona State 17-0 Saturday in Winona, Minn.
With the win, the Vikings improved to 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in the league and lead the NSIC South Division standings. Winona State fell to 4-3 and 3-3 in the league.
Senior
Joe Clark tallied 114 yards on 19 carries, and gave the Vikings a late two-score lead when he scored from 1 yard out with 14:28 remaining. Later on in fourth quarter, Clark became Augustana's all-time leading rusher,when he surpassed Chris San Agustin's career rushing mark of 3,098 yards. Clark now has 3,104 yards on 648 carries along with 37 touchdowns in his lustrous Augustana career.
Tyler Schulte, who had played sparingly since sustaining an injury three games ago, sparked the Viking offense in the second quarter, scoring on a 56-yard pass play from
Josh Hanson to put the Vikings up 7-0 5:12 before intermission. Hanson finished 15-of-21 for 216 and had 13 rushes for 22 yards.
Despite allowing Winona State to enter Augie territory four times on the day, the Viking defense made stops when it needed to. In the first half, the defense forced two missed field goals and a turnover on downs, and in the second half, forced Winona State into a turnover on downs and an interception on its final possession.
Andrew Keel led the Vikings with 10 tackles, including 3 for loss.
Zac Kallas intercepted two passes and broke up one as well.
For Winona State, Rayon Simmons led the rushing attack with 13 carries for 69 yards, while quarterback Evan Aber went 13-of-33 for 130 yards. Eric Swan caught five passes for 68 yards, while Ryan Jirgl led all players with 12 tackles.
The Vikings will continue on their quest to stay unbeaten next Saturday as they travel to Moorhead, Minn., to face MSU Moorhead. The game is slated to kickoff at 2 p.m.
