Minnesota State slips past Augustana 2-0

Minnesota state outshot Augustana 17-9 to defeat the Vikings 2-0 Friday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer in Sioux Falls, S.D.   

Augustana drops to 3-6-2 (2-3-1- NSIC). Minnesota State rises to 6-4-1 (4-1-1 NSIC).

Stephanie Goos led the Vikings with three shots, all on goal. Stacy Dally had two shots, one was on goal.

Goalkeeper Amanda Wagner made seven saves.

Jill Goodrich got the action started early in the first period with a header off a corner kick by Stephanie Goos. The shot was saved by MSU's goal keeper Brittany Cygan.

The Mavericks then kept Wagner busy, having to make two saves before MSU's Cassie Weik fired a shot past her off a free kick 26 minutes into play.

At 40:15 the Mavericks found the back of the net again while deep from the right side.  The goal gave MSU a 2-0 lead over the Vikings before the end of the first period.

The Vikings hit the post twice in the second period. At 66 minutes Mackenzie Trom hit the post. The shot was followed by Maren Werth hitting the crossbar at 75:29.  

The period ended without either team scoring. 

Augustana was outshot 11-4 during the first period but would hold MSU to only six shots in the second period, while the Vikings had five.

The Vikings will hit the field for another home match on Sunday against Southwest Minnesota State at 1 p.m.
