WAYNE, Neb. - No. 3 Wayne State terminated 70 balls against Augustana to top the Vikings 3-2 in their final match of the season Friday night in Wayne, Neb.
Wayne State continues on into post season action 26-3 (17-3 NSIC); Augustana went 14-15 (10-10 NSIC).
Lindsey Petersen downed a career-high 17 balls, while
Taylor Hrdlichka matched Petersen, hitting another 17 herself.
Hrdlichka hit an impressive .417 in the evening. Petersen had just two errors to hit .349.
Holly Hafemeyer was also in double-figure kills with 13.
Dani Haley had 56 assists and
Grace Sanders led Augustana with 26 digs.
Augustana and WSC swapped leads a number of times in the opening set. At 19-18 the Vikings gained strength offensively and had five consecutive kills. Petersen made two of those five kills to bring Augustana ahead of the Wildcats 23-18. WSC made an effort to come back by sneaking in a kill but Petersen crushed any hopes by downing another attack to help Augustana take the first set.
The Vikings' confidence continued to rise in the following set as a few Wildcat errors assisted Augustana in gaining a 7-3 lead. WSC regained composure and tied the score at 13-13. The rest of the set remained close as the score tied another seven times before WSC snatched a pair of points to take the set 27-25.
WSC began the third set stronger than Augustana to take the first few points off kills. The Vikings continued to trail behind the Wildcats throughout the set. A late six-point run left Augustana trailing WSC by just one at 19-18. The Wildcats were able to keep control of the lead, however to steal the set.
Determined to continue battling, the Vikings entered the following set strong and just continued to keep gaining strength. The Vikings held the Wildcats to .167 hitting percentage. Augustana made 16 kills and had just one error in the set.
Augustana has not fared well in fifth sets this season and this time was no different. WSC had 11 kills to finish off the Vikings 15-7.
Augustana hit .229 overall with 11 blocks. WSC hit .205 in the evening with eight blocks.
Tali Fredrickson led the Wildcats with 16 kills.
