SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana had five players score in double figures as the Vikings cruised past William Penn 103-60 Monday night in their season opener in Sioux Falls.
The loss drops WPU to 2-3.
Alex Feeney led all scorers with 18 points, while
Molly Hayes and
Megan Doyle each had 15.
Faith Tinklenberg added 14 points, and
Kristi Board finished with 12.
Hayes also handed out 11 assists to notch her third career double-double. Tinklenberg was one rebound shy of a double-double, grabbing nine boards on the night.
The Vikings shot 52.0 percent from the floor and connected on 13 3-pointers.
Behind a balanced scoring effort from six players, the Vikings had little trouble with the Lady Statesmen in the first half. Hayes, Tinklenberg and Feeney each had nine points before intermission to pace the Vikings.
Augustana took its first double-digit lead just less than seven minutes into the contest after
Tessa Wilka drained a 3-pointer to give her team a 21-10 lead.
That bucket was part of a 24-0 run by the Vikings that spanned seven minutes and eventually earned Augustana a 29-10 advantage.
The Vikings took their largest lead of the half on another surge--this one a 10-1 spurt--to go up 47-20 with 3:14 left before the break.
Augustana went inside for more than half of its points in the first half, scoring 26 points in the paint. The Vikings also took advantage of WPU's 11 turnovers, turning them into 18 points.
By the midway point of the second half, Augustana had built itself a comfortable, 40-point lead. Their largest lead of the night, 46 points, came at the 5:56 mark when
Cami Koehn connected on a 3-pointer to put her team ahead 94-48.
Augustana settled on a 43-point difference to close the contest.
The transition game proved effective for the Vikings, who had 34 fast-break points in the win. Augustana also turned WPU's 22 turnovers in 33 points.
Eleven Vikings found their way into the scoring column.
Augustana returns to action on Wednesday, making the short trek to the Sioux Falls Arena for a contest with cross-town rival the University of Sioux Falls for the fourth annual Prairie Spirit Charitable Challenge. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
