Cody Schilling and
Cameron McCaffrey each had 19 points to lead Augustana to a 65-53 victory over Valley City State Wednesday night in Sioux Falls.
Augustana stays perfect at 3-0; VCSU counted the game as an exhibition and sits at 3-5.
Augustana committed just five turnovers in the win.
Schilling and McCaffrey both had strong showings from the field, going 7 of 12 and 6 of 13, respectively. The duo also combined for five 3 pointers.
Eric Jorgensen grabbed six boards on the evening.
VCSU got 11 points each from Calvin Kraft and Mark Klingberg.
Augustana's NAIA opponent hung around for much of the game; VCSU trailed by just three points heading into intermission.
Augustana held as large as a seven-point lead in the first half, but that advantage didn't come until late in the half. VCSU worked from mostly a two to four point difference for a majority of the half.
McCaffrey, though, scored 12 points in the first half to stifle any building VCSU runs.
Augustana eventually chipped its way to a double-figure lead in the second half, using a 12-2 run at the midway point to take a 12-point lead at 55-43 with 4:31 remaining.
Derrick De Zeeuw's back-to-back dunks in the middle of the surge energized his team. Augustana would hold at least a 10-point lead for the remainder of the contest.
An 8-2 spurt with just more than two minutes left gave Augustana its largest lead of the night at 17 points.
Augustana's play inside accounted for nearly half of its points as the Vikings netted 32 points in the paint. Augustana also held a 38-31 edge in rebounding.
Via the defense of
Chad Hettermann, Augustana also held VCSU's top scorer--Kraft--to just 11 points and five 3-point attempts. He entered the game averaging nearly 16 attempts per game from behind the arc.
Augustana returns to action on Friday, hosting Dakota State at 7 p.m.
