Augustana downs Winona State 3-1

Holly Hafemeyer posted a career-high 15 kills and hit .382 to help Augustana defeat Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponent Winona State 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17) this afternoon in Winona, Minn.

The Vikings remained perfect this weekend and are now 14-14 (10-9 NSIC). WSU falls to 11-15 (6-12 NSIC).

Taylor Hrdlichka and Lindsey Petersen joined Hafemeyer in a solid offensive performance. Hrdlichka recorded 13 kills, while Petersen had 12.

Dani Haley led all players with 50 assists.

Grace Sanders tallied an impressive 30 digs.

Brianna Erickson and Kayla Wallerich each had a mini-run behind serve to help Augustana gain an advantage on WSU early in the first set. The Warriors battled back, however and only faced a two-point deficit at set point. A bad set by WSU sealed the 25-22 win for Augustana. WSU outhit the Vikings in the set 18-16.

The Vikings began the second set dominant with six kills to jump on a 9-4 lead. The lead continued throughout most of the set until the Warriors had a late six-point run to knot the score at 22-22. The score tied again at 23-23, but the Vikings sealed the win off a pair of kills from Hafemeyer.

Unlike the previous sets, Augustana never saw a lead in the third set and was held to a .146 hitting percentage. WSU had 16 kills to take the set 25-20.

The Vikings were able to regain composure in the final set, hitting a solid .316 while allowing only nine WSU kills. Petersen recorded her third kill of the set to give Augustana match point and the Vikings were able to take the win 25-17.

The Vikings had 11 blocks, WSU had eight.

Augustana will wrap NSIC action Nov. 12 at Wayne State. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
