GAME NOTES (PDF)
This week: Augustana (3-1) opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with trips to Southwest Minnesota State (3-1) on Friday at 8 p.m. and Minnesota State (4-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The series: Augustana and Southwest Minnesota State have played 17 times, and the Vikings are 10-7 against the Mustangs. Augustana won the last contest between the two programs, thumping SMSU 89-59 in Sioux Falls last season. The two teams have played just twice as conference opponents, splitting those tilts. Saturday will be the 101st game between Augustana and Minnesota State in a series that dates back to the 1932-33 season. The Vikings are 49-51 agains the Mavericks and have won the last three meetings. For more information on both series, turn to pages 9 and 10.
Last week: Augustana spent the Thanksgiving holiday in the Elmen Center, playing Valley City State last Wednesday and Dakota State last Friday.
Cody Schilling and
Cameron McCaffrey each had 19 points to lead Augustana to a 65-53 victory over VCSU. DSU's Jordan King spoiled Augustana's chance at the go-ahead bucket with a steal with two seconds remaining to keep his team's one-point lead and help the Trojans pull out a 52-51 victory over the Vikings.
Northern Sun opening weekend: All 14 of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's programs open play this weekend. This year's conference season is getting started a little earlier in 2010-11 because of the NCAA's “Life in Balance” program, which mandates that student-athletes are given a full week off over the Christmas holiday.
Augustana in conference openers: Since the 2000-01 season, Augustana is 1-9 in conference openers. The Vikings' lone win in that spane came during the 2006-07 season when they knocked off North Central Conference neighbor Nebraska-Omaha 83-60 at home. In NSIC openers, Augustana is 0-2, having lost both of its conference-opening contests to U-Mary to start the 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns.
Tom Billeter is 6-1 in conference openers as Augustana's head coach.
