MSU Moorhead sneaks past Vikings

BOX SCORE

MOORHEAD, Minn. - Cody Schilling's 3-point attempt with three seconds left rimmed out and secured a 64-61 Minnesota State Moorhead victory over Augustana Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball in Moorhead, Minn.

MSU Moorhead moves to 6-3 (3-2 NSIC); Augustana falls to 6-4 (3-3 NSIC).

Schilling's 3-pointer would have tied the game at 64-64. The Vikings battled back from an eight-point second-half deficit and trailed by just one with 15 seconds left. The Dragons, though, connected on needed free throws in the closing stretch to ensure the win.

Jake Driscoll and Andrew VanHavermaet scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, to lead the Dragons.

Schilling had a game-high 21 points for Augustana.

MSUM led 35-26 at halftime behind six 3-pointers. The advantage was as large as 15 points at the 9:06 mark.

The Vikings ushered in the second half on 7-0 and eventually took a lead after Trevor Hass drilled a 3-pointer with 11:45 remaining.

But the Dragons held off the lingering Vikings down the stretch.

Augustana had the deficit down to one point twice in the game's final two minutes, but six Dragon free throws kept the Vikings from ever taking the lead.

VanHavermaet gave Augustana fits as he drilled four 3-pointers in the Dragon win. As a team MSUM shot 44.4 percent from behind the arc, connecting on 8 of 18 3-pointers.

The Vikings were outrebounded 30-25.

Augustana returns to action on Jan. 1 and 2 when the Vikings host St. Cloud State and Concordia University, St. Paul.
