Megan Doyle led No. 17 Augustana in a 69-55 victory over Minnesota State scoring 22 points to continue Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn.
The win improves the Vikings' record to 8-1 (1-1 NSIC), and MSU drops to 3-3 (0-2 NSIC).
Other top scorers for Augustana were
Kristi Board with 14 points,
Alex Feeney with 11 points and
Molly Hayes with 10 points.
Tessa Wilka and Board each grabbed five rebounds to lead the Vikings.
It was a slow paced game as Augustana had only six fast break points and MSU had none.
The Mavericks committed four turnovers in the first four minutes of action to help Augustna to an early lead that was never lost during the game. MSU had its chances to gain a lead over the Vikings when the score tied at 11-11 and again at 13-13, but the Mavericks were unsuccessful and Augustana continued in dominance, maxing its lead at 37-22 with 4:48 left in the half. The Vikings led at the break, 38-26 with Doyle contributing 17.
MSU's bench outscored Augustana's 12-2 in the first half.
Both teams played the first two minutes of the second period scoreless. It wasn't until 15:44 that Board hit a jumper to put Augustna on the scoreboard. By then the Vikings had given up eight points.
After Board ended the Viking scoring drought, Doyle put up five consecutive points.
With 4:51 left in the game, Augustana had its largest lead, 62-46. Hayes scored six of the last seven points for the Vikings.
Both teams scored an even 16 in the paint during the final half.
Augustana was 10 of 12 from the charity stripe and MSU was 10 of 14.
The Vikings held the Mavericks to a 36.8 scoring percentage, while shooting 51.9%.
Augustna returns home next weekend to face U-Mary and Northern State.
