The Augustana women's basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season Saturday, falling 75-46 to Wayne State in Wayne, Neb. The loss dropped Augie to 16-5 overall and to 10-4 and a tie for second place in the NSIC. Wayne State improved to 17-4 and 10-4 in the league.
Shots were not falling early for either team, and the drought continued throughout the contest for the Vikings, as they shot a season-low 26.1 percent (18-of-69) for the game, including 7-of-33 from three-point range (21.2 percent).
After several turnovers and missed shots by both squads early, an
Alex Feeney three-pointer gave the Vikings a 5-2 lead at the 15:41 mark. However, the Wayne State Wildcats caught fire and made 10-of-16 shots over the next eight minutes to build a 27-10 lead.
Molly Hayes hit a three pointer at the 4:17 mark to cut the WSC lead to 12, but the Wildcats held the Vikings scoreless the rest of the half to build a 43-19 halftime lead.
Three-pointers by
Megan Doyle and Hayes cut the Wayne State lead to 18 with 16:45 to play, but the Vikings would get no closer.
Feeney led the Vikings with nine points, while Doyle scored eight and collected seven rebounds.
Tessa Wilka contributed seven points off of the bench. Ashley Arlen led the Wildcats with a double-double effort of 32 points and 14 rebounds. Alisha Brown scored 14.
The Vikings will return home next weekend to face Upper Iowa and Winona State. Augie will take on Upper Iowa Friday at 6 p.m., while the contest versus Winona State will begin Saturday at 5 p.m.
