Augustana used a four-run third inning to rally for an 8-5 victory over Minnesota Duluth in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday in Winter Haven, Fla. UMD won the opener 3-2.

Augustana, which is now 9-9 on the season, trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the second inning of Game 2. But the Vikings scored twice in the second and took the lead for good with 4 runs in the third to take a 7-4 lead.

In the second, Derek Hansen roped an RBI single that scored Dan Morrison. However, when UMD centerfielder Collin Stinogel misplayed the ball, Gates Cook came around to score as well to trim the Bulldog lead to to 4-3.

Augustana scored 4 runs on 5 hits in the third inning. Deryk Marks lined a run-scoring single that scored Nate Hewes. Nate Baumann followed with a 2-run double that scored Marks and Drew Heithoff. Cook capped the rally with an RBI single that scored Charlie Dubanoski.

Dubanoski plated an insurance run in the fourth inning when he lined a single to score Baumann, who walked and stole second to lead off the inning.

The Vikings got strong relief pitching in the second game. After starter Bennett Johnson left the game after suffering an injury on the final out of the first inning, relievers Patrick Carroll, Nick Lehnen and Bret Severtson scattered 11 hits and allowed 4 runs over the final 6 innings.

Carroll (1-0) earned the win, giving up 3 runs in the second inning as UMD collected 4 hits, including 3 that barely left the infield.

Lehnen allowed only 1 run and 3 hits in 2.2 innings of work. Severtson got the final 4 outs of the game for his first save of the season.

Dubanoski and Morrison each had 2 hits, while Baumann had 2 RBI. Heithoff led Augie with 2 runs scored.

The Vikings had their chances to win the opener as well. Augustana trailed 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning before rallying. Heithoff led off the inning with a double and moved to third when Marks drilled a single to centerfield. Dubanoski followed with a double to score Heithoff. Two batters later, Cook drew a 1-out walk to load the bases, bringing Morrison to the plate. However, Morrison grounded into a double play to end the scoring threat.

Augustana had 7 hits in the game, with Baumann and Dubanoski each collecting 2 hits.

Kenny Lidke (0-3) was tagged with the loss. He tossed 4 innings of 7-hit ball, allowing only 1 earned run. He struck out 6 and did not walk a batter. Tyson Gau was also effective in relief, giving up only 1 hit in 2 shutout innings of work.

Augustana concludes its spring trip on Wednesday with a single 9-inning game against Minnesota, Crookston, at 10 a.m. EDT.
