The Viking baseball team opened its conference season today with a two-game sweep of Concordia-St. Paul. Augie beat the Golden Bears in an 8-6 shootout before dominating 7-1 in the second game.
The wins improve the Vikings to 12-9 overall this season and 2-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Golden Bears drop to 7-10 overall and start the conference season 0-2.
The Vikings used a big first inning to get past the Golden Bears in the first game, thanks to back-to-back home runs by
Charlie Dubanoski and
Dan Morrison.
Nate Baumann reached on a fly dropped by the center fielder and
Drew Heithoff was walked. A single to center field by
Deryk Marks scored Baumann before Dubanski's blast scored three runs for the Vikings. Morrison belted a solo right after, making the score 5-0 at the end of the first.
Baumann led off with a double in the second, stole third, and then scored on a ground out by Marks, moving the Vikings ahead 6-0.
The Golden Bears were able to tie the score, plating two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and scoring a big three runs in the sixth.
Augie regained the lead in the seventh, starting with a double by Heithoff. A single by Marks brought him in before Marks stole second and scored on a single by Morrison.
Per Nestigen was the Viking starter, going 5 innings and allowing three runs on two hits. He struck out seven.
Bret Severtson (2-1) gets the win while
Derek Hansen records his first career save in two innings of work.
Marks was 2 for 4 with three RBI while Morrison was also 2 for 4 with two RBI,
Augie kept their offense going in the next game, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. Baumann was walked and then scored on a double by Marks. Marks advanced to third on a wild pitch and then was brought in on a double by Dubanoski.
The Vikings scored two more thanks to back-to-back singles by Baumann and Heithoff. Baumann scored on a fly out by Marks and Heithoff scored on a single by Dubanoski.
Augie scored one run each in the third, fourth, and fifth. They kept the Golden Bears scoreless until the sixth when Ben Lemke singled followed by a single from Bryan Lippencott. Lemke then scored as Brenden Furrow grounded into the double play.
Neither team would score again.
Baumann was 2 for 2 in the second game, scoring twice and recording two RBI.
Tyson Gau went all seven innings for Augie, only allowing two hits and striking out two batters. Gau had a no-hitter until the seventh inning. A bloop hit and a weak ground ball that hit a divot and took a bad hop were his only two hits of the game.
The Vikings will be back in action again tomorrow as they play Concordia-St. Paul in a double header beginning at noon.
