Augie Baseball Loses Home Opener to USF

Box Score

The Augustana baseball team lost its first home game of the season on Tuesday, dropping a 6-4 decision to the University of Sioux Falls.

The loss moves the Vikings to 14-10 on the season and 4-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The Cougars are now 11-5 overall.

USF got on the board right away, with Andrew Jenkins leading the game off with a double to right field. He advanced to second on a ground out by Todd Neu and eventually scored on a Damian Kardas gound out.

They continued to roll as Bryan Campos led the second off with a double. Zach Ireland was hit by Augustana pitcher Bennett Johnson. Both Campos and Ireland scored on an Augustana fielding error, giving the Cougars the 3-0 lead.

Augie cut into that lead in the bottom of the second, Gates Cook was walked and then stole second. He advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt and brought home on a groundout by Nate Hewes.

The Vikings then had an exciting third inning, tying the score at 3-3 after back-to-back homeruns by Deryk Marks and Charlie Dubanoski

Augie took the lead in the fifth, thanks to a leadoff blast by Dan Morrison.

The Cougars powered past them in the sixth. James Borges was walked before Ireland drilled a homer of his own, putting USF up 5-4.

USF scored one more run in the seventh off of an Augustana error, and kept the Vikings from scoring again. Augie batters were out 1-2-3 in the seventh and the Vikings left two runners on base in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Dubanoski went 2 for 4 with one RBI.

Nate Baumann was also 2 for 4 with a walk. He stole three bases in the game.

Marks (1-1) was charged with the loss. He went four innings, allowing two runs on two hits and struck out three batters.

Kenny Tomek (1-0) gets the win for USF and Andrew Jenkins earned his first save of the season.

The Vikings will play at Ronken Field again tomorrow for a double-header with Minnesota, Crookston. Game one begins at 2 p.m.
