The Augustana baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota, Crookston at Ronken Field. The Vikings totaled 27 hits in the two games, beating the Golden Eagles 15-2 and 7-2.
The wins improve the Vikings to 16-10 on the season while UMC falls to 2-15.
The Vikings scored a third of their runs in just the first inning, as
Nate Baumann led off with a double.
Drew Heithoff singled to the shortstop, and a flyout by
Deryk Marks advanced Baumann to third. A single by
Charlie Dubanoski drove in Baumann before
Dan Morrison drew a walk.
A double by
Derek Hansen scored both Heithoff and Dubanoski. Then a groundout by
Gates Cook scored Morrison. Hansen scored the final run of the inning by stealing home. This put the Vikings up 5-0.
Augie racked up more runs in the second, as Marks got things rolling with a triple. Morrison singled through the right side, scoring Marks. Hansen was walked before Cook sent one over the fence, tallying three runs and making the score 9-0.
The Vikings started the third with two quick outs, but Marks singled to center, setting Dubanoski up for a two-run blast. Augie's bats stayed hot as Morrison followed the homer up with a double to right field and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. A single by Hansen plated Morrison and made the score 13-0.
The Golden Eagles were able to get on the board in the fourth with P.J. Zwach leading the inning off with a double. Augustana pitcher
Patrick Carroll walked Stephen Woods and David Lovely singled to shortstop to load the bases. Erik Nockleby drew the bases-loaded walk, making the score 13-1.
A solo bomb by pinch hitter
Chris Ward was the only run for the Vikings in the fourth.
UMC scored again in the fifth, when Casey Woodside singled to center field. Teddy Gutman singled to right, and Woodside scored on the throwing error by the Augustana right fielder.
Augie scored their final run of the game with a lead off homer in the sixth inning by pinch hitter
Jacob Lehnen.
Carroll (2-0) earned the win for the Vikings. He allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings of work. He also struck out two batters.
Nick Seliski got the save for Augustana, going three innings and only allowing one run on four hits.
Steve Schroer was the losing pitcher for UMC.
In game two, the Vikings started big again, as Baumann led off with a single before stealing second and third. He scored on a single by Martinez. Martinez stole second and then Dubanoski reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, which also advanced Martinez to third. A single by
Nate Alfson plated Martinez. A walk by Lehnen loaded the bases with Vikings, and
Brian Knight hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Dubanoski. Alfson eventually scored on a pass ball, giving Augie the 4-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
A solo homerun by Baumann in the second improved their lead to 5-0.
UMC manufactured a run in the third, when Augie pitcher
Sam Gotham walked Lovly. He stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a single to right field by Josh Kraby.
The Vikings scored one run in both the fourth and sixth innings. Baumann scored in the fourth off of triple by Marks. In the sixth, Martinez reached on a fielder's choice then advanced to second when Marks was hit by a pitch. A single by Dubanoski brought Martinez home.
The Golden Eagles were able to put up one more run in the seventh, as Gutman reached on an Augustana error. He advanced to second as Lovly was hit by a pitch. A double by Reed Olistad brought in Gutman and made the final score 7-2.
Gotham (1-0) earned the win for the Vikings, going four innings. He allowed only one run on two hits and struck out seven batters.
Matthew Lyons (0-1) was the losing pitcher for UMC.
Dubanoski was 4-for-7 on the day with four RBI and a home run.
Nate Baumann went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run. He also stole three bases on the day.
Marks had a triple in each of the games. He was 4-for-7.
The Vikings will be on the road this weekend, playing two doubleheaders against Bemidji State in Bemidji, Minn. Games on Saturday start at 1 p.m. while Sunday's games are scheduled to begin at noon.
