The Augustana baseball team posted two wins over Bemidji State on Saturday in Bemidji, Minn. The Vikings took the first game 15-8 before also dominating the second 14-7.
The wins improve the Vikings to 18-10 on the season and 6-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Beavers drop to 10-13 and 1-5 in conference play.
Neither team scored in the first three innings of game one, but the Vikings blew the game open in the fourth, scoring four runs. Dan Morrison drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Nate Alfson. Gates Cook was hit by a pitch, loading up the bases for the Vikings. A sacrifice fly by Derek Hansen scored Morrison before a double down the left field line by Nate Hewes scored Alfson. Cook and Hewes scored the final two runs of the inning on a single by Nate Baumann.
The Vikings kept rolling, with Drew Heithoff leading the fifth inning off with a walk. He scored shortly after as a double to right center by Deryk Marks brought him home. A single by Alfson eventually scored Marks, giving Augie a 6-0 lead.
The Beavers wouldn't go away easily, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth. One of these runs came off of an Augustana error.
Each team would score two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, with Augie keeping the lead 10-7.
The Vikings went scoreless in the eighth, and the Beavers cut into their deficit, scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth. BSU's Nic Jelacie led off with a single and advanced to second in a wild pitch. A fly out by Joe Chism moved Jelacie to third before he scored on a single by Silvernagel.
Augie put the game out of reach in the ninth, as Baumann led the inning off with a single. Heithoff was hit by a pitch and a fly out by Marks moved both runners up. Charlie Dubanoski singled up the middle, scoring Baumann and Heithoff. Morrison was hit by a pitch before Alfson sent one over the right field fence, making the final 15-8 in favor of the Vikings.
Hanson (2-1) got the win for the Vikings, going six innings. He allowed four earned runs and struck out four batters.
In game two, the Vikings had a narrow 7-5 lead going into the sixth inning. Augie shut the door on the game, scoring seven runs. Baumann and Heithoff hit back-to-back singles before Marks blasted a home run, scoring the first three runs of the inning.
Dubanoski kept the inning going by singling to left field. Morrison grounded out, advancing Dubanoski before he then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Alfson and Hansen both walked, allowing Cook to score Dubanoski with a single to right field. Hewes hit a sacrifice fly to score Alfson and a double by Baumann brought home Hansen and Cook.
Game two looked like it would belong to Bemidji State as they scored three runs in the first inning. The Vikings were able to answer though, scoring three of their own in the top of the second.
Dubanoski led off the inning with a single before advancing to second on the single by Alfson. Both runners advanced on a throwing error by the pitcher and Dubanoski scored the first run of the game off of the single by Hansen. Brian Knight belted a double, scoring Alfson before Hewes grounded out, scoring Knight.
The Vikings scored one run in the fourth and another three in the fifth, when Morrison scored on a single by Hansen and a blast by Knight scored two more runs.
The Beavers would only score three more runs in the game.
Per Nestigen (3-1) was the winning pitcher for the Vikings. He allowed only two earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. He also struck out four batters.
Baumann was 8-for-10 on the day with five RBI.
Alfson went 5-for-7 and drove in four runs.
The Vikings will play the Beavers in a double header again tomorrow. First game begins at noon.
