Despite outhitting St. Cloud State in both games, the Augustana baseball team was only able to split its doubleheader against SCSU Saturday in St. Cloud, Minn. The Vikings won the first game 4-2, but lost the second 11-8.
The Vikings record progressed to 23-19 and 10-8 in the NSIC. Augie is currently in a tie for sixth place in the league standings. St. Cloud State is now 27-7 and 14-4 in the conference.
The Viking pitching staff put together a stellar performance in game one. Tyson Gau threw six innings for the win (3-1), giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out two. Deryk Marks scattered two hits in the seventh and eighth, and Bret Severtson held SCSU hitless in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
Derek Hanson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Nate Baumann scored two runs for the Vikings while going 2-of-3 with a double.
In the second game, following a solo home run by Baumann, the Huskies took advantage of some early Augie pitching miscues. Four SCSU runners reached on walks or being hit by a pitch, and SCSU used this and some timely hitting to post four runs after one inning of play.
The Vikings answered to tie in the second, but after five innings, SCSU had taken the lead 7-5.
In the sixth, two consecutive doubles by Charlie Dubanoski and Gates Cook scored two runs, and Hansen hit a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run, as the Vikings took an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
However, SCSU put together a rally of its own, as they tallied four runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. Augie could not answer in the top of the seventh, and SCSU secured the 11-8 win.
Marks picked up the loss (1-2) for the Vikings.
The Vikings will matchup again on Sunday with St. Cloud State. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
