The Augustana softball team shutout Northern State in two victories Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D. The Vikings prevailed in the opener 3-0 and 8-0 in the nightcap.

Augie improved to 29-8 overall and 11-1 in the NSIC, where they sit atop the standings. Northern State dropped to 6-24 and 2-12 in the league.

The Viking bats were alive as they went a combined 25-for-64 (.391) in the two contests. Jenny Brown, who went 3-for-4, singled in the first inning, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Traci Fransen's single to give Augie the early 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, Chelsi Winskowski singled home Shelby Thompson, and Elizabeth Murray bunted home Kayla Henke to lead Augie to the 3-0 win.

Chelsey Durland started the game for Augie and gave up only one hit in two innings while striking out three. Mickey Anderson came in to finish the final five innings, picking up the win (2-0) in the process. Anderson tallied nine strikeouts on four hits.

Fransen went 3-for-5 in the second game, including a two-run home run in the third to put the first Augie runs on the board and a single in the fourth to score Henke in Augie's five-run frame. In the inning, Kelsey Kalkman batted in two runs with a double to center field, which was followed by # Brittany Coufal#'s single to score two.

Durland's home run in the top of the seventh rounded out the scoring for the Vikings.

Ashley Meyer threw a three-hitter for the Vikings, tallying four strikeouts and no walks.

The Vikings continue their northern swing on Sunday at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon.
