Augustana's
Britt Stewart tossed her first career no-hitter to lead the Vikings to a 3-0 victory over Minnesota, Crookston, Friday in Crookston, Minn. The Vikings completed the sweep of UMC by winning the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 5-4.
The 23rd-ranked Vikings improved to 18-5 overall and 2-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while UMC slipped to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC .
Stewart, a sophomore from Minnetonka, Minn., was dominant against the Golden Eagles as she improved to 8-1. Stewart faced 24 hitters, just three over the minimum, and struck out a career-high 13. She walked one and hit one batter. The third hitter that Stewart was unable to retire reached on an error.
Stewart retired the first 5 hitters she faced before Stacey Marcum reached on an error by Augie shortstop
Brittany Coufal. The only other baserunners UMC managed to get came in the fourth inning when Erin Fowle drew a 2-out walk and Sarena Diedrichs was hit by a pitch. But Stewart got out of that inning by striking out Marcum.
Over the final three innings, Stewart struck out 6 of the 9 hitters she faced.
Elizabeth Murray provided the only run Stewart needed when she blasted a 1-out home run in the fourth inning.
Taylor Kapsch gave Augustana a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a 2-run shot with 2 outs.
Murray led the Viking offense by collecting 2 of the team's 7 hits.
In the opener, Augustana fell behind 4-0 after three innings as the Golden Eagles scored an unearned run in the second and 3 unearned runs in the third.
But the Vikings tied the score with 2 runs in the fifth on a 2-run single by
Traci Fransen and 2 more runs in the sixth on a 2-run homer by Coufal.
The Vikings scored the game-winning run with a 2-out rally in the seventh.
Shelby Thompson and Coufal each drew 2-out walks. Kapsch then lined an RBI single to score Thompson.
Augustana rapped out 11 hits in the game, but the Vikings stranded 11 runners.
Jenny Brown collected a team-high 3 hits, while Kapsch and
Chelsey Durland each had 2.
Ashley Meyer (6-2) picked up the pitching victory after tossing 4 2/3 innings of hitless and scoreless relief. She walked 2 and struck out 9. Durland started the game for the Vikings. She lasted 2 1/3 innings and allowed 2 hits and 4 runs while striking out 3.
Augustana concludes its weekend road trip on Saturday with a doubleheader at Minnesota State Moorhead beginning at noon.
