The Augustana softball team scored 22 runs and held Bemidji State (BSU) scoreless en route to two wins over the Beavers Sunday at Bowden Field. Augie won both games in five innings by scores of 14-0 and 8-0.
The wins improved Augie's record to 35-8 and 17-1 in the conference while dropping BSU to 8-33 and 2-18 in the league. With eight games remaining, the Vikings hold a one-game lead over second place Concordia.
Augustana overmatched Bemidji State in all facets of the game. The pitching staff held BSU to three hits in the two contests, while striking out 16 batters. Conversely, the Vikings were 23-of-49 (.469) from the plate in the two contests.
Ashley Meyer improved her record to 14-3 with the win in game one. She threw three innings, giving up one hit while striking out five.
Britt Stewart came in to pitch the final two innings, holding BSU hitless and striking out two.
Traci Fransen, who has a home run in each of the last four games, opened the scoring in the first game in the bottom of the second when she hit a solo home run. Later in the inning,
Brittany Coufal, who was 2-for-2 in the game, hit a three-run home run to increase the lead to 4-0.
After posting three more runs in the second, the Vikings added another seven in the third, highlighted by Fransen's two-run double and Stewart's two-run home run.
In the second contest, Augie got on the board in the bottom of the first, as Fransen doubled home
Kayla Henke and
Chelsey Durland hit a two-RBI double to score Fransen and
Jenny Brown.
However, BSU held Augie scoreless the next three innings before the Vikings erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game with the eight-run deficit rule through five innings. Fransen hit a three-run home run, her 11th of the season, to put the Vikings up 6-0 before RBI singles by Durland and
Taylor Kapsch ended the contest at 8-0.
Mickey Anderson pitched the complete game win to move her record to 3-0. She gave up two hits while striking out nine.
The Vikings will take the field again on Monday in a doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth. Augie hosts the Bulldogs at Bowden Field beginning at 1 p.m.
