The Augustana baseball team swept a doubleheader Saturday against Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. The Vikings won the first game 25-0 by mercy rule after seven innings and the second 14-0. The day was record-breaking for the Vikings as the 25 runs on 23 hits were both single-game records. Also, the 32nd win marks the most single-season wins in the program's history.
With the wins, the Vikings record improved to 32-22 overall and 19-11 in the NSIC. Northern State dropped to 5-39 and 2-24 in the league.
In the opener, the Vikings tallied 25 runs on 23 hits, hitting .561 (23-of-41) as a team. The 25 runs scored is a team high this season. Augie scored in every inning except for the sixth, and posted an 11 spot in the top of the fifth. Of the 23 hits, eight were for extra bases.
Charlie Dubanoski went 3-of-5, driving in five RBIs, including driving in four on his fifth-inning grand slam.
Per Nestingen (5-1) pitched the complete game shutout, giving up two hits in seven innings while striking out five.
Augustana's momentum from game one carried over into game two. In the nightcap, the Vikings batted .425 (17-of-40) as a team and held the Wolves to two hits.
The second game was dominated by the long ball, as six Vikings hit home runs to drive in 10 of the 14 runs.
Deryk Marks hammered two – solo shots in both the third and seventh innings. Dubanoski tallied another, bringing his season total to 14.
Nate Hewes was 3-of-4, including a solo home run.
Tyson Gau picked up the win (5-1) as he pitched five innings, giving up two hits while striking out four.
Eric Docken came in in relief and threw retired six consecutive batters to end the game.
The Vikings will take on Northern State again tomorrow in their last games of the regular season. The doubleheader is slated to begin at noon.
