ROLLA, Mo. – Augustana finished perfect in the opening day of the "Middle of Everywhere Classic" in Rolla, Mo., Friday, defeating Chadron State 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-13) and Southeastern Oklahoma State 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-17).
Augustana moves to 3-4 on the season.
In the first match of the day against CSC,
Jordan Spatenka was strong against the Eagles, finishing with 11 kills.
Taylor Hrdlichka and
Brianna Erickson recorded dominant performances as well, each recording seven kills.
Brooke Lewko and #Lindsey# Petersen each tallied six kills.
Dani Haley recorded a match-high 28 assists.
Grace Sanders led a strong defensive effort with 19 digs, while Erickson finished the morning with another nine.
The Vikings charted a .326 hitting percentage, the highest yet this season.
Augustana started slow in the opening set, falling to an early 5-0 deficit before earning their first point off a kill by Erickson. The Vikings continued to gain momentum as the set rallied on and were finally able to erase their deficit at 15-15. The remainder of the set was a back and forth battle, but at 24-24 Hrdlichka clinched the win with two kills.
The Vikings continued to gain speed during the second set as Augustana saw an early lead and never fell behind, taking the set by 13 points.
Augustana capitalized on a poor CSC performance in the final set and left the Eagles with 12 errors in the set.
Spatenka and Petersen again had strong offensive matches against SOS, killing 11 and 10 balls, respectively.
Haley handed out 34 assists in the win.
The Vikings controlled throughout, holding SOS to a .069 hitting percentage. Augustana also aced 10 serves to cruise to the win.
The Vikings will continue play tomorrow at the "Middle of Everywhere Classic" at 11 a.m. against Arkansas-Monticello followed by Rockhurst at 3 p.m.
