GOLDEN, Colo
. - Mesa State and the Colorado School of Mines spoiled Augustana's season opening matches by charting 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21) and 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18) wins over the Vikings Friday at the Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colo.

The losses drop the Vikings to 0-2 on the season.

Jordan Spatenka was the lone Viking to crack the double-figure kills mark in opening match of the 2010 season, finishing with 10 against MSC.

Dani Haley and Kayla Wallerich split time at setter, handing out 13 and 11 assists, respectively.

Grace Sanders, an All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference pick a year ago, led all with 21 digs.

The Viking offense struggled throughout, managing just a .043 hitting percentage.

MSC used a 7-2 run midway through the first set to charge to a 25-17 win; another surge in the middle of the second set—this one putting the Mavericks up 17-10—pushed their lead to 2-0.

After a 20-20 tie in the third and final set, MSC rattled off five of the matches final six points to complete the sweep.

Tara King's 24 assists led the Mavericks.

A 45-assist performance from Wallerich in just her second collegiate match wasn't enough to lift Augustana past host CSM in its second match of the day.  The Orediggers held off the Vikings in four sets, including a third set, extra-points victory that would have put Augustana up 2-1.

Spatenka had another solid outing, recording a match-high 18 kills; Alex Burke checked in with 12 kills to go along with five blocks.

Defensively, five different Vikings were in double-figure digs.  Sanders' 20 paced Augustana.

Augustana continues play in the Oredigger Classic on Saturday, facing Slippery Rock (Pa.) at 11 a.m. and Fort Lewis at 5:30 p.m. (both times Central).
